Putnam County Chamber of Commerce

Chartered in 1856, Cookeville is the county seat of Putnam County and home to the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Technological University. Cookeville is located between Knoxville and Nashville. The economy of Cookeville is among the strongest of Tennessee’s twenty micropolitian areas. With a population of 99,942 it is also Tennessee’s largest micropolitian area.

Algood, named after Joel Algood, was mainly farmland until railroads reached the area around 1891. The city has seen plenty of growth since then rails first came. As of the year 2000 there were 2,942 people living in Algood.

In 1902 Baxter was named in honor of Jere Baxter. Baxter is located in a beautiful section on the western end of Putnam County in middle Tennessee. Located on I-40, Baxter is 70 miles east of Nashville and 8 miles west of Cookeville.

With its breathtaking views of the Cumberland Mountains, the Town of Monterey is one Middle Tennessee’s true tourist treasures. A small-town society with none of the big-city rush, Monterey is nestled in the heart of the Cumberland Plateau. Yet it has quick interstate access to neighboring Cookeville, as well as large cities like Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
